Do The Boom Boom

Do The Boom Boom

Get your funky butt to elipaperboy.com and check out this fantastic entry into the new soul sweepstakes and check out Eli "Paperboy" Reed Paperboy and the True Loves.  You can hear four of his songs at http://www.myspace.com/elipaperboyreed, two fast & two slow.  The fast, "Take My Love With You" with get this, it's available on vinyl, a 45 for the words sake, and "Doin' The Boom Boom".

The two fast tunes are my favourites but the soul ballads are really good too!  It's just I'd rather dance fast than slow, got to shake those legs and wiggle at the knees.  Go man go!  The cat makes music this old fool can dance to!

Eli's songs are easily mistaken for lost Stax recordings and actually the energy reminds me of the great Stax Revue Live In Europe albums which featured everybody on Stax that mattered, Sam & Dave, Otis, the Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, the MGs etc..  Well then there's the King / Federal Records influence, Hank Ballard and James Brown.  And what a band, a fantastic old-school horn sound (& I don't mean that not to soulful big band sound of Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chicago etc.) simple but funky drummer and bass and great back up vocals not to mention the guitars and they look so young to be playin' this music, well to me anyway.  What are they doin' diggin' and playing this old soul music?

The new album is just out, "Roll With You" on Q Division Records.  The  way back machine soul music genre just keeps building,  Jamie Lidell, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse and apparently there's this new singer out of Britain, Duffy, who I haven't had the chance to check out yet but more on
that soon and there must be a lot more out there around the planet.

Eli and the True Loves will be in Toronto at the Horseshoe on July 9 and the next day they'll be at the Ottawa Blues Festival, July 10.

In the words of Hank Ballard "keep on dancin' all over the place...".

talk to you soon,

the Blues Rockin' Daddy
