Paul Quarrington & Pork Belly Futures

Paul Quarrington, this years winner of the 'Canada Reads Award' for his novel 'King Leary', was in Port Colborne this past week to read from this and his new work, Paulquarrington 'The Ravine'' at Port
Colborne's Reading Series. To the delight of the sold out audience, Paul interspersed reading from his work with music.  Two members of his band 'Pork Belly Futures', drummer and lyricist, Mark Worthy and vocalist Rebecca Campbell joined Paul and his guitar playing several cuts from
his latest CD, 'Pork Belly Futures'.

The next day, Friday, the word went out that Paul had stayed in town and would be joined by the rest of his band and would be playing along the Welland Canal at The Smokin' Buddha Restaurant's outside patio.  With literary lyrics and a funky downhome beat, Quarrington and Pork Belly Futures 'rocked'  Port Colborne both physically and mentally.  The night featured superior lyric writing from Paul and his drummer, Martin Worthy, who writes, Paul said, the more literary lyrics.  Lines like "...Michael Ondaatje stole my girl..." and much more of the same.  Great backup vocals, percussion and dancing by the very talented Rebecca Campbell, my kind of blues-oriented bass pickin' from Chas Elliot who formed a great rhythm section with the afore mentioned Martin Worthy, made me wanna' dance.  And then to top the band off, the multi-talented Stuart Laughton on lead guitar, steel guitar, mandolin and blues harp with his very clean, lean and right on the money stylings!  Check out their new CD out on Cordova Bay Records.Porkbellyfutures   They are joined by one of my favourite blues guitarist, Tedddy Leonard and on vocal by the one and only Roxanne Potvin with the late great Richard Bell on keyboards.  I'd like to thank Paul and the band for presenting just great 'adult' music the other night in Port Colborne!

Do The Boom Boom

Do The Boom Boom

Get your funky butt to elipaperboy.com and check out this fantastic entry into the new soul sweepstakes and check out Eli "Paperboy" Reed Paperboy and the True Loves.  You can hear four of his songs at http://www.myspace.com/elipaperboyreed, two fast & two slow.  The fast, "Take My Love With You" with get this, it's available on vinyl, a 45 for the words sake, and "Doin' The Boom Boom".

The two fast tunes are my favourites but the soul ballads are really good too!  It's just I'd rather dance fast than slow, got to shake those legs and wiggle at the knees.  Go man go!  The cat makes music this old fool can dance to!

Eli's songs are easily mistaken for lost Stax recordings and actually the energy reminds me of the great Stax Revue Live In Europe albums which featured everybody on Stax that mattered, Sam & Dave, Otis, the Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, the MGs etc..  Well then there's the King / Federal Records influence, Hank Ballard and James Brown.  And what a band, a fantastic old-school horn sound (& I don't mean that not to soulful big band sound of Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chicago etc.) simple but funky drummer and bass and great back up vocals not to mention the guitars and they look so young to be playin' this music, well to me anyway.  What are they doin' diggin' and playing this old soul music?

The new album is just out, "Roll With You" on Q Division Records.  The  way back machine soul music genre just keeps building,  Jamie Lidell, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse and apparently there's this new singer out of Britain, Duffy, who I haven't had the chance to check out yet but more on
that soon and there must be a lot more out there around the planet.

Eli and the True Loves will be in Toronto at the Horseshoe on July 9 and the next day they'll be at the Ottawa Blues Festival, July 10.

In the words of Hank Ballard "keep on dancin' all over the place...".

talk to you soon,

Folk Roots Legend Willie P. Bennett Dies

by patti stirling

Canadian folk music legend Willie P. Bennett Wpb5 died Friday Feb. 15 2008 at his home in Peterborough Ontario at the age of 56.

Willie, who played mandolin and harmonica, performed regularly on his own and with the Fred Eaglesmith Band but it was his amazing talent as a songwriter and wordsmith that will live on in our memories.

Get out your old folk music vinyl, cassettes and CD's  and have a Willie Fest today.

Put on your Blackie and the Rodeo Kings cover tunes and raise a glass to an extraordinary man with an extraordinary talent.

You will be greatly missed Willie but your songs will live on; your music represents a generation of Canadians who found their identity and their voice through your music.  Rest in Peace .

Doug Lang of Better Days Radio has posted a musical tribute to Willie P.Wpb3 on his page…. www.myspace.com/betterdaysradio

Fellow Canadian Scot Nolan was a wonderful tribute to the spirit of Willie P. in a song he wrote titled: Drive Day. You can find the song on Scott’s myspace page: www.myspace.com/thescottnolanband

Sweet Soul Music

Sweet Soul Music

Early 60's soul music continues to be resurrected by the Brits...I'm talkin' Jamie Lidell!Jamielidell1
I just love the voice & the sweet soul grooves...yeah I know he's got related personas too, but the soul!.  His sound encompasses everything early funky from Ska to Stax, from Herbie Hancock in his Headhunters era to Jimmy Reed's "Shame, Shame, Shame" but he adds a nice contemporary feel.  The man goes upside my head and the cat can dance!  Check out his videos.  I see a lot of another old favourite of mine, David Byrne, in his visual presentation.  Leg wigglin' music.  Anyone who got into James Hunter's 2006 offering, "People Gonna' Talk" are gonna' love Jamie's style.   Check Jamie out at jamielidell.com, I can't get enough of the tune on his homepage in the video showing Lidell and the band working on a new song.

And in related blues music news Fathead has again been nominated for a JUNO award,
for their latest disc "Building Full Of Blues", for "Blues Recording Of The Year". It is the band's third nomination. They had previously won the coveted award in 1999 for "Blues Weather". The Junos take place this year in Calgary on Sunday April 6.

And it's great my old 'soul' mate Guitar Mikey's got a new CD out...check it out Jam Zero 1 at

...take it where you find it...

...you take it where you find it...

Tonight I put Blues Street on the TV & before you know it they were playin' Harrison Kennedy's "The Jones", great tune with a distinct Hammer style & sound & apparently off his recent CD.
I've had to spend some nothing-to-do time in a hotel room a couple of times lately & there was no radio reception even if I could find a station with something tolerable to listen to ...nothing on the tube but then I remember to check out the music channels somewhere in the higher numbers of your on-line TV-guide so I do it & there I am listening to John Mayall (who is 70 something & still giving back to his roots) channeling Shelter Freddie King, living in the palace of the king...help me make it thru the nite..check out the original Freddie King cuts...if you ain't got it go out & get it...and then up next the Hammer's Richard Newell aka King Biscuit Boy, wailin' Hiway 61, what wonderful tempo & the awesome harp solo!!!....Dancin_fools & then up next my new favourite Canadian blues song writer extraordinare & a damn good harp player, Paul Reddick doin' "I'm A Criminal"...& a few tunes later Sue Foley's doin' 'New Used Car"', turned me into a dancin' fool... talkin' 'bout Galaxy satellite & digital cable blues radio & it seems to have something to do with the CBC...the music gods at work bless them...all the blues all the time & a great mix of new, less new, old, older & really older blues & a ton of Canadian talent too...I hope the boys are gettin' their royalties off this satellite /cable play?...later I'm listening to Carlos del Junco's wonderful harp solo on 'Heaven's Where I Dwell' from the CD 'Big Boy'...I'm talkin' 'bout Blues Street...check your TV guide(s) for the digital channel to tune to...& for me the best part...they tell you who & what the song is your listening to & what CD it's off of...brilliant...now I can google or social network the performer...like I did with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings & if you like the funky blues a'la Memphis style you should too!...& hey if you're not into the blues they got music channels for every taste & I mean every taste even disco stuff & nature sounds too sort of so if you need to you can hear & get to know what nature sounds like even if you don't get out much...p.s. don't try this at that downtown Hammer hotel they want $10 to access Blues Street!  Holy Chagall!

The Jimmy Reed Highway

The

Jimmy

Reed

Highway

…that’s where I play…

Jrtributephoto

A tribute to the blues genius of Jimmy Reed at last!

PBS…Austin City Limits…Friday nights at 11:30 pm on normal TV WNED (it’s on WNED-HD Saturdays nights)…the November 2 show …Jimmy Vaughn & Omar Kent Dykes...a tribute to Jimmy Reed…what a treat for an old Jimmy Reed fan like me…the people’s choice…he influenced so many of his contemporaries as well as generations to come.

Jimmyreedhighway

What a trio of harp players doin’ the Jimmy Reed harmonica stuff…Kim Wilson, Delbert McClinton & the still totally awesome James Cotton…he can’t sing no more but he sure can still play.

The drummer Wes Star was blues old school perfect…no over playing…not a beat out of place…& lots of the right kind of ‘tin’ when it was needed.

…you got me runnin’ you got me hidin’…bright lights big city…take out some insurance…you got me dizzy… natural born lover…I ain’t got you…come love …cowboys did Jimmy Reed…soul guys did Jimmy Reed…Brit-rockers did Jimmy Reed…Elvis did Jimmy Reed…everybody did Jimmy Reed maybe even Wayne Newton who knows!…big boss man!

Vaughn was playing two real old early 50’s guitars…one was a Kay & the other who knows…Gary Clark Jr. who did a nice version of Shame Shame Shame was also playing something real old & early electric. Vaughn pays big tribute to the fabulous guitar behind Reed, Eddie Taylor, who taught Jimmy Reed to play…& I guess Mr. Bob Dylan must’ve dug the harmonica in the holder style Mr. Reed popularized.

Vaughn says on a short interview during the program that the first thing he learned to play was the basic Jimmy Reed groove…didn’t we all…& that he was still playing that groove to this day…yeah me too, it’s still the best groove to make you get up & dance.

Somewhere out there there’s a tribute to Jimmy Reed by Vaughn & Dykes CD…I went to jimmievaughn.com & the CD, the Jimmy Reed Highway, is featured on the home page but it fails to mention what label it’s on.

To get a taste of the show go to PBS.org  & search ‘programs’ in the upper task bar & scroll down to Austin City Limits…at the moment there’s a video clip from the show on the Austin City Limits home page that says it all & when the home page changes it looks like they archive all their video clips…& you can go to YouTube  & see some live clips some dude made that are pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJz_UNYf6io

…keep on dancin’ to the blues…

So Blue So Funk & A Little Bit 'Cool'

So Blue So Funky

The Niagara Blues & Jazz Society’ “Live On Request International Blues & Jazz Festival” was a huge success despite the weather being a little on the cool side & the threat of rain.  Hundreds of people showed up to sit out doors in Welland Market Square under propane heaters & hear some very soulful, funky blues & jazz.  When I got there around 5 pm, local group The Ants were on stage groovin’ out their early 60’s R ‘n B party sound a ‘la Muscle Shoals & Memphis. It was like a flash back to ’64.  They have a great tenor sax in Al Robertson & bassist Bill Neudorf belts out the vocals.  The group is rounded out by drummer Jim Casson & the funky Warren Stirtzinger on guitar.  They create a wonderful danceable sound.  For a number of tunes at the end of their set they were joined by a great sounding Hammond B3 player, who turned out to be Roger Niznik, the next act on the bill.

Roger Niznik’s mother, who was at the event, sent Roger to Buffalo from their home in Port Colborne in the early 60’s for Hammond organ lessons & did they ever take!  You’d swear it was Buffalo back in the early 60’s where the B3 reigned supreme.  Working with a drummer & a guitar player Roger opened his set with a rousing & one of my all time organ favourites “All About My Girl”.  Fast & funky versions of jazz & B3 standards such as “Summertime” followed then Al Robertson from the Ants came up & we suddenly we had the classic Jimmy Smith style B3 quartet.   The crowd ate it up along with some very fine ribs being served at the barbeque.

Toronto based Johnny Max Band was up next & having never seen Johnny before, it was a revelation!  Great funky blues originals & the odd cover including a great fresh take on Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home To Me”. Much to my surprise, former Fathead guitarist Teddy Leonard was in the band.  Teddy is my favourite Canadian all round blues & r ‘n b guitarist & he is a perfect addition to Max’s sound.  Johnny Max is one dancin’ fool & plays dance-a-matic music which again is based on the early 60’s r ‘n b evolving to soul sound especially the early Toronto soul sound.  The crowd loved it and hit the dance floor.  Funky blues & r ‘n b was the order of the day.

The event was capped by Bill King’s Saturday Night Fish Fry, which featured Diane Braithwaite on vocals & the Shuffle Demon’s Richard Underhill on alto sax...and they were rockin’…rockin’ & a boppin’ & a jumpin’ to the end of the event.

Next year on the Labour Day weekend, in honour of Welland’s 150th birthday, the Niagara Blues & Jazz Society is planning a 3 day blues & jazz festival. After the success of this years event that should be some long blues filled weekend!

The Blues is back in Niagara in Thorold in mid-October.  It’s the return of the Canal Bank Shuffle which will feature Sugar Ray Norcia & the Hammer’s own Jack De Keyser () as well as Harrison Kennedy.  More about the Shuffle another time.

In other Hammer related Blues news, Andy Grigg’s website, reallivingblues.com is carrying welcome news about an upcoming re-release by & a biography of Richard Newell aka King Biscuit Boy.  In Andy’s words… “…two long-postponed projects will be coming to fruition in the Fall of 2007; a King Biscuit Boy compilation CD using unreleased tracks from 2 (and possibly 3…) KBB albums plus tunes from unreleased sessions. I can assure you that all the tracks so far assembled are killer numbers with Richard’s greatest vocal and harmonica performances among these gems. Also, we hope to have completed the manuscript for Richard’s biography by Nov 2007. It’s amazing just how revered Richard Newell a.k.a. King Biscuit Boy is in the U.S. and Europe and while many artists in recent years have laid claim to being Canada’s Top Blues Performer, the veteran Blues Stars from London, England to Chicago, Illinois seem to be aware only of King Biscuit Boy. One tidbit from the upcoming KBB biography is that ex-Beatle Paul McCartney invited Richard to play at his 40th Birthday Bash on the Queen Mary. While Professor Longhair and The Meters showed for the Giant Party, Richard did not, dismissing Paul and The Beatles as “…the ones who destroyed American Radio!” Needless to say, managing Richard became a task for the fearless! But, we should all remember The Music that King Biscuit Boy/Richard Newell left us and it truly was revolutionary in its’ day. No artist before or since has turned more Canadians on to The Blues and while Music Industry Politics still interfere with Richard Newell’s induction into various Canadian ‘Halls Of Fame’ (shame on you folks!) KBB fans know the difference between ‘shit-and-shinola’ and KBB was pure Shinola! If any of our readers have King Biscuit Boy memories or stories they’d like to share with us (for possible inclusion in the book) please email us at realblues@realbluesmagazine.com. (By the way, listening to King Biscuit Boy’s “Urban Re: Newell” album on Stony Plain/Blue Wave for the 1,000th time I have to rank “That’s No Lie” as the Greatest Canadian Blues tune ever released with his “New Orleans” a close second…)"

Hey! Hey! The Blues is alright!
