westside concert theatre

Hey everybody. Last night I went to the Westside Concert Theatre Benefit with Sauce Rock-it, Faceless Tomorrow, 40 Sons and Daughters, High Voltage and Porcelain Youth. This was no ordinary show, so I thought my review shouldn't be ordinary either. So sit back and read my favourite parts of the show.

Favourite song by each band:

Sauce Rock-it
TIE: Take to the Skies, Sputum

Faceless Tomorrow: House Of Mirrors

40 Sons and Daughters:
THREE WAY TIE: It All Comes Back To Me, My Illusion, and Walk With Me

High Voltage: Rumour Mill

Porcelain Youth:
TIE: Dethrone, Set Me Straight

My favourite....

head bang: This happened when Jesse Daigle was onstage with High Voltage singing an Alice in Chains cover. He did a bend at the waist and his hair went perfectly over his face then flipped perfectly back. I have never seen such a great head bang:)

on stage moment: When Josh Alvernia (High Voltage) would use the smoke machine on lead guitarist Sean Royle whenever he would have a guitar solo. I thought that was really cool!

mosh pit moment: When all the big scary looking guys would go at each other, but when the music stopped they all seemed to be good friends... weird.

crowd moment: At many times during the 40 Sons and Daughters performance you would see like 50 kids at the front head banging in perfect unision with hair flying all over the place.

moment of the whole show: My friends and I yelling the lyrics in each other's faces.

My favourite ....

Drummer of the night:
TIE: Cristiano Andreatta (40 Sons and Daughters), Adam Cannon (Porcelain Youth)

Singer of the night:
TIE: Pete Moss (Sauce Rock-it), Mike Repic (40 Sons and Daughters)

Lead Guitarist of the night
TIE: Kevin Auton (Faceless Tomorrow), Sean Royle (High Voltage)

Rhythm Guitarist of the night: Eric Martin (High Voltage)

Bassist of the night:
THREE WAY TIE: Graeme Hawkins (40 Sons and Daughters), 'E-Rock' (Sauce Rock-it), Justin Bozzo (High Voltage)

What I liked best about the show:
EVERYTHING. Nothing seemed to go wrong. Usually at shows you have to wait around for a while for bands that show up late or the equipment doesn't work or something. But last night everything ran smoothly and it seemed like only 10 minutes between each band played. I liked how the crowd eventually got really into the music and moshpits started.

The funniest moment of the show...
My friend and I were right at the front near Pete Moss when Sauce Rock-it was playing. The song came to a soft part where it's only Pete singing. Of course my friend and I just had to scream the words out, but they were the wrong words. Oh well it was funny!!!

- Good job to all the bands! You guys kicked ass and helped inner city kids at the same time. Every single one of you should be so proud of yourselves. I'm sure this is a show tons of people will be talking about for a really long time.

bad luck show month

This month, there are great shows. Last week there were two in two days that I wanted to go to, but I was in Montreal on both of those days. The shows were Mariana's Trench and Euphoria's Depression and the Social Theory Reunion with Guilty, Circuit for the Blackout, The Goodbye Celebration, and tons of other bands. Hopefully these bands will play again soon:)

As you may know, on April 20th, The Migraines, 40 Sons and Daughters, Faceless Tomorrow, and High Voltage are at the Westside Concert Theatre. But on the same night are three other amazing shows. It sucks I can't be in four places at once.

One of them is Sauce Rock-it at the Underground. If only this show was the next night I would totally go. Oh well, they will probably be back at the Underground in a few months.

Another show is Beautiful Nothing at the Burlington YMCA. As you can probably tell by my other posts, I love Beautiful Nothing, and I love the Burlington YMCA. I haven't seen them in a long time but they are playing the Underground on May 19th with Porcelain Youth. You all should definitely check it out!

The last show is Euphoria's Depression and Rides Again at Philthy McNastys... Rides Again is a band I just started liking. This show should be kick ass so go see it.

So, I could have gone to like 6 shows this month, but my bad luck made it impossible. If anybody who reads this goes to any of these shows please post pictures or something:) Thanks. That's all for now!

Where: The Westside Concert Theatre

When: April 20th 2007

Who: The Migranes, Faceless Tomorrow, 40 Sons and Daughters, High Voltage, Porcelain Youth

Why: To raise money for the organization Hamilton City Kidz

I just gave you details on the biggest, the loudest, and the most fun show you will get to go to all year. Each and every one of these bands have huge fan bases so the place will be packed. All of the proceeds will go towards Hamilton City Kidz. I thought since this show is more than just awesome music I should talk about what exactly Hamilton City Kidz have done.

Every year tons of families in the Hamilton area do not have enough money to get their children Christmas presents. All a parent wants is for their child to have a good Christmas. As if they were getting their minds read, the big red City Kidz bus pulled up and people walked out with presents in hand. In 2005 alone more than 2500 gifts were given out to the Hamilton community. This past Christmas City Kidz brought the gift of Christmas to more than 3200 children.

here's some more info:

In May, City Kidz, The City of Hamilton, Canadian Tire, and The Hamilton Police, will launch the 3rd annual Bikes for Kidz Challenge. The hope of this activity is to provide children with brand new safe bicycles and a course on how to use them. Some kids in Hamilton who are fortanate enough to have a bicycle are riding unsafe ones. Some of these unsafe bikes included broken seats, no brakes or flat tires. Your donations can give a child a brand new safe bike. Go to www.citykidz.ca for details. (information from www.citykidz.ca)

If you are interested in volunteering then this is how you can do it-
Got some spare time? Looking to make a difference in a child’s life? Why not volunteer at City Kidz?

Present opportunities available include: Team members, Jr Team Members (12-15 yrs), Captains, Co-Captains, Support Team, Program Team (Stage), Bus Drivers, etc, etc.

Need more info? Why not contact us.

The Social Theory Reunion

On April 14th there is a great show at the Formac in Burlington. The Social Theory, Guilty, Holiday, The Goodbye Celebration, Circuit For The Blackout, and Distance Between Stars and a few more are playing that night. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to this show. I am in Montreal from the 12-14th of April for my school's band trip.

The Social Theory formed 2005. They quickly became one of the biggest acts out of Hamilton's music scene. Despite a year and a half of writing music/playing shows. Despite great reviews from fans and other groups, the band broke up by the summer of 2006 because of personal and creative reasons. Most fans thought they were never to see these five talented guys on stage together again. They were mistaken. In the beginning of 2007, The Social Theory is back in the Hamilton Scene ready to melt our faces off. This band has a unique style of post-hardcore pop punk that is unmistakable The Social Theory. (information above from www.myspace.com/thesocialtheory)

The Goodbye Celebration, Guilty and Circuit for the Blackout put on great shows. I am kind of upset that I am missing all of these bands, but there will always be more shows. If anybody reading this goes to the show, would you mind sending me a little message about how it went and how the bands played? That would be greatly appreciated.

Okay that's all I have for now. Have a great show month and I'll see ya next time!

Sauce Rock-it

On Friday night, I saw Sauce Rock-it for the first time in like 3 or 4 months. I have been wanting to see them but every time they play it seems like I either am at hockey at the exact time, or I just can't go. I was really happy when I could actually go to this show. It was my first show ever at Philthy McNastys. It was an interesting night.

Sauce Rock-it totally killed it. I loved every aspect of their set. They played my favourite Sauce Rock-it song, Say Ah, and it was dedicated to me! That pretty much made my day right there. My friend that I was with loves the song too and we were dancing around singing along to the words and having a great time. Also, when we heard the beginning to Sputum, we both screamed at the same time. We are huge fans. They played a new song that was being recorded that night for a new single. I didn't catch the name of it but it was really catchy. It was also a great opportunity for Pete Moss to show off his amazing versatile voice. Bassist 'E-Rock' (sorry I don't know his last name) was grooving to the music and strumming along with tons of skill and experience. Drummer Scott is really young but it better than a lot of drummers I've seen in older bands.

Something a bit strange happened at this show. Randomly out of nowhere a bunch of guys and girls in togas and other costumes come running down the stairs screaming and yelling. Why wear togas to a show? I don't find it that weird, I was just a bit surprised. But all of those people were having the time of their lives so that's all that matters.

Mugshot @ the Underground.

Last week I went down to the Underground for about the millionth time. One of my favourite bands, Mugshot, was playing. I got to see two new bands and I really enjoyed them.

The first new band I saw was Crush Luther. Crush Luther is a fun, poppy band that makes you want to move with the music. The first thing I noticed about this band was their talented, strong vocalist Luther Mallory. 'Emo kids pushed black scenester hair out of their eyes; hands were removed from pockets; and the joys of moving your body along with the beat were rediscovered.' This is what is written on the Crush Luther myspace about their music and the effect it has. I agree. It is impossible to just stand there while listening to Crush Luther. They have really fun lyrics and fast complicated guitar. I really enjoyed their set. Good job guys:)

The next new band I saw was 16th Avenue. 16th Avenue is a pop rock band from Saint John, New Brunswick. They have been on tour with Mugshot and other bands for the last couple months. They introduced themselves as 'The shit band following around the good ones'. I disagree, this band is a talented upbeat, energetic group of guys who get into the music. Vocalists Adam and Joel are insanely good with their voices. My favourite song from them was Tentativa Favorita. Catchy and hard guitar with quick percussion make up this song. The second it started I knew I would really get into the song and like the band. So I think you should check out this band and maybe catch a show if they are playing around here agian.

The band of the night, the one and only Mugshot. I have only seen Mugshot one other time at the Burlington Music Centre and they blew me away. I was supposed to see them there again yesterday but I couldn't go, so I went to the Underground show instead. Singer Nick blew me away as usual. His voice was the first thing I noticed about the band. He can sing higher than most guys can but goes right back down to low notes like it's the easiest thing in the world. The played my favourite song, Are We Done. This song talks about how losing a best friend can affect you, and the questions you ask. I sung along to the whole song, took pictures and had a huge smile on my face. They played another cover, one of them was Irreplacable by Beyonce. I have always liked this song and to hear Mugshot singing it was pretty cool. Drummer Matt is very strong with tons of skills. The two guitarists, Steve and Kyle, add the whole catchy sound to the band. They have a lot of shows around the Hamilton area with Ten Second Epic and one at the Underground with them on May 6th. So it was a fantastic show!
